Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh
is has spellbinding location between the Vindhayas and Satpura
mountain ranges. Covering an area of approximately 437 sq. kilometer,
this wetland plateau is the terrain of the beautiful and timid
animals to the most ferocious of tigers. Once been the personal
hunting ground of Maharaja of Rewa, this wildlife  region is
remembered for the majestic white Tiger, who was named as Mohan.
This tiger, now stuffed to be displayed on the wall of the palace
of Rewa King. The credit of initiating the breed of the captive white
tiger goes to this very tiger. Known to be having the highest
concentration of tigers in the country, this forest was declared
as a national park in the year 1968 and then on strenuous efforts
have been taken by the government to preserve it.
Sal is one tree than can be found in abundance while there are
mammoth stretch of Bamboo forest and grasslands. The lush
vegetation provides an excellent opportunity to the animals
to hide away from the human gaze. The national park attracts
huge amount of tourist participation,  a visit to the park will give you a chance to decamp from the prosaic life of the city and towns. Pamper yourself with a little spice in the monotonous life.

Welcome to Kingdom Animalia

Already celebrated for the presence of tigers in the park,
if Dame Fortune is accompanying you then one can sight 46 to 50
tigers in this very forest. Though boast of being the home of the
white tigers, today these white tigers have more or less become
elusive. Visiting the national park will be an experience of treating

your eyes, Wherever you will look, there will surely be some activity going on that will make your visit special.
This nation park houses more than 22 species of mammals and 250
species of birds. Langoors and Rhesus Monkey following the trend
were perhaps the earliest inhabitant of the forest. Distinct
varieties of fox and Hyenas can also be spotted. Sloth Bear is
another most embraced animal. Illustrious varieties of deers are
also spectacle. List of carnivores menu includes the Asiatic jackal,
Bengal fox, sloth bear, ratel, gray mongoose, striped hyena, jungle
cat, leopard. the horned and hoofed animals frequently sighted are
sambar, wild pigs, palm squirrel, spotted deer, chausingha, nilgai,
chinkara and gaur. Mammals such as dhole, the small Indian civet,
and lesser bandicoot rat can also be seen occasionally.

THE FORT

The fort still belongs to the Maharaja of Rewa and permission is required to visit it. However permission is available locally and no trip to Bandhavgarh is complete without making an effort to climb up the fort.

There are two ways up on the plateau, a jeep track and a footpath-both steep. It is far easier to see the fort by the jeep but much more rewarding to make the journey on foot. There is a convenient place to park vehicles on the southern side of the fort in the lush jungle which surrounds its base. This point is known as Shesh Saaiya, named after a unique 35 foot (11 meters) long statue of reclining Vishnu carved around the 10th century, from whose feet the Charanganga is said to flow. A rectangular pool of spring water lies just beneath the statue and the path to the main gate of the fort. On the other side of this imposing gateway lie 560 acres (227 hectares) of grassland, over which are scattered turtle-filled tanks and the many remains of the human inhabitants of the fort- from ancient statues to the barracks occupied by Rewa's troops upto independence. At a brisk pace the walk from the Shesh Saaiya to the southern side of the fort need only take an hour, but if you stop to see the statues and temples on the way it can easily take much longer. As you follow the path southwards, the most remarkable sights are the 10th century rock images of the incarnations of Vishnu. A statue of Narsimhan ( half man half lion) towers almost 22 feet above the grass. There is a carving of Barah Bhagwan (the boar incarnation), and a small temple enshrining a large image of Vishnu in his fish avtaar. The tortoise incarnation stands unenclosed and flanked by later carvings of Ganesh, the elephant God, and other deities. The charm of this walk lies in discovering these monuments in the jungle, unspoilt and unexploited. Some of the statues lie off the main path and so it is best to take a guide. Apart from the avatars, well worth seeing are three small temples of around the 12th century. These temples are deserted but the fort is still used as a place of worship. Kabir Das, the celebrated 16th century saint, once lived and preached here.

The natural ramparts of the fort give breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside. Vultures wheel around the precipice, which also attracts blue rock thrushes and crag martins. The fort has a small population of Blackbuck, which have been reintroduced and to some extent protected from Tigers in the park below by repairs to the masonry walls at the edges of the fort.

Thus Bandhavgarh offers excellent game and bird viewing and a historical interest which most other parks lack.

Mandu - the celebration of love

Mandu is a celebration in stone of life and joy, of the love of the poet-prince Baz Bahadur for his beautiful wife, Rani Roopmati. An ancient town of the medieval age, it is one of India's most historical monuments set against the backdrop of the Vindhyas. Elegant Islamic palaces, mosques and onion-domed mausolea stand beside large medieval reservoirs and precipitous ravines.

Jahaz Mahal (Ship Palace)

This ship-like structure was the brainchild of Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji. The palace served as his harem and was home to 15,000 maidens. Two lakes bound the palace on the eastern and western sides and underpin the illusion of a ship.

Taveli Mahal

Located on the south of Jahaz Mahal, this ancient monument was used as a guardhouse and a stable during the Mughal regime. It now acts as a gallery of Archaeological Survey of India and houses various archaeological findings.

Hindola Mahal (Swing Palace)

It is located near the Jahaz Mahal and is a large hall that is supported by sloping buttresses. It served as a pleasure palace of the Mughals, who organized their evening parties here during the monsoon season.

Champa Baoli

An elaborately constructed step-well, the place was so named as its waters were believed to smell like the 'Champa' flower. A summer retreat of the emperor,; it houses cool wells, underground rooms (Taikhanas) & subterranean bathrooms.

Jami Masjid

This huge edifice, built in 1454, was one of the finest achievements of the Ghauri dynasty. Faced with red sandstone, the monument dominates the village of Mandu and is structured on the 'Omayyed Mosque' in Damascus, Syria.

Tomb of Hoshang Shah

It lies on the south-west of the Jami Masjid and is believed to be the oldest marble building of India. Sheathed completely in white marble, its design and workmanship greatly influenced Shah Jahan, who sent his architects to study it before building the Taj Mahal.

Ashrafi Mahal

It was built by Mahmud Shah Khilji. Originally constructed as a Muslim religious school (Madrasa), the place was later extended to become his own mausoleum. The building collapsed due to faulty architecture and now stands amidst ruins.

Jain Temple

It is a modern temple complex that enshrines images of various Jain 'Tirthankars'. All the temples are richly festooned with marble, silver and golden statues of the Jain saints. The place also houses a Jain museum inside it.

Speak Asia: Your money down the drain?

When there's an easy way to earn money, it almost always is or eventually will turn out to be a preposterous scam. It's surprising how people still don't realize it. A (well educated) friend of mine very enthusiastically called me saying he'd signed up for Speak Asia. "You have to invest Rs 11,000 and you get Rs 4000 every month. All you have to do is answer two surveys a month." Now, that's Rs 48,000 you'll earn in a year for an investment of Rs 11,000; a whooping 336 per cent return for just a few clicks!! For a financial journalist who loves Sherlock Holmes; this scheme had scam written all over it, or shall I say Ponzi written all over it (elementary dear Watson). So I did some bit of sifting through various agency reports on the scheme and rewarding, it was.

For all those who haven't yet read about the investigation by the Headlines Today. Its report reveals that the leading integrated market research agency (Speak Asia) has been peddling a pack of lies. The company claims that it conducted surveys for top MNCs in India. There were reports that during a trade fair in Goa, the company's marketing team had claimed that ICICI, ING Vysya, Bata, Airtel and Nestle were its clients. However when Headlines Today contacted these companies, they refused any business links with Speak Asia.  The future of the company remains in a cloud after the various allegations that have been launched against Speak Asia.

Not surprisingly, most investors in Speak Asia are mainly Indians (we are such a gullible lot, aren't we?) The company claims to be established in Singapore (and some say Malaysia and others still say Indonesia), there seems to be hardly any investors there.

Indian officials, of course, have realized that a quick-buck scheme is RED ALERT, but nothing can be done about incase the scheme falls through most authorities claim.

An MCA official told livemint.com, that the ministry could do nothing because Speak Asia was not registered in India as a company under the law. The RBI and Sebi have also said they cannot investigate the company.

An RBI spokesperson said that Speak Asia does not come under its purview because it is a marketing-cum-chit fund company and "gives users some kind of service in exchange for money".

A Sebi official said Speak Asia does not come under its regulatory purview because it has issued no securities till date. "This is a marketing company which has just sold a software through its website for a price."

Now, they also have a foolhardy plan so that no one can be pinned by authorities.
Firstly, the company operates on franchisee model so on the face of it you make no direct payments to the company "Speak Asia", instead it's routed through its franchise (bank account) that investment amount further is passed to other investors who are entitled to some per cent of the investments . Sounds complicated? Well, that's the idea!

Now, if you suddenly stop getting your "assured" returns and Indian authorities do probe in to the entire sham; you will find that the company can easily bail themselves out. Why? Well, simply because you haven't made direct payments to Speak Asia as an entity but instead to a franchise that has  only been paid a certain percentage to forward it to the main distributor and who then further passes it on to someone else (yes, that whole complicated routing) . Ergo, the only person you can pin it on to is the investor himself (Surprise, that's you!!). Sadly, you also happen to be the victim of this whole scheme. Long story short, you were just made a BAKRA!!

As of 30 October 2007 the total fleet size of commercial airlines in India was 439. In 1994 the Air Corporation Act of 1953 was repealed with a view to remove monopoly of air corporations on scheduled services, enable private airlines to operate scheduled service, convert Indian Airlines and Air India to limited company and enable private participation in the national carriers. However, beginning 1990 private airline companies were allowed to operate air taxi services, resulting in the establishment of Jet Airways and Air Sahara. These changes in the Indian aviation policies resulted in the increase of the share of private airline operators in domestic passenger carriage to 68.5% in 2005 from 0.4 of 1991.
